reykjavik turns off street lights to turn up the northern lights

On Wednesday night, street lights were turned off in Reykjavik, Iceland, and people were encouraged to darken their homes so everyone could watch the Northern Lights.
The City Council issued a statement saying street lights in multiple districts of the city will be closed between 10 p. m. and 11 p. m.
Remind people to drive carefully at local time.
The city, with a population of about 120,000, is located right below the Arctic Circle and proud of its frequent Northern Lights performances.
The attempt to cut power seems reasonable.
Photos and videos released by people in Reykjavik on social media show dancing lights under a dark sky.
Although Reykjavik is a small city, light pollution from Reykjavik can be seen in past Aurora Borealis photos, showing orange or pink light on the horizon.
The Icelandic news agency Reykjavik Trail reported that in order to adapt to the delayed start of the solar system, the lights went off until midnight, and when the green light did not appear as scheduled, some people were annoyed at first.
The northern lights are often visible in the Arctic circle, sometimes far below the Arctic Circle.
The same solar activity that led to strong lights over Iceland is creating good conditions for northern lights in most parts of Alaska, where predictions of northern lights on Thursday night are highly likely.
